Gran Turismo-What went wrong?

Gran Turismo-What went wrong? During the Playstations first console I had heard about a racing game called Gran Turismo. A game so advanced in its planning that each release took years to come out. Promising the most authentic car physics, sounds and real world track locations ever seen in a game. The game felt different right from the start with license tests as a way to get you used to the various tracks and cars. The ability to buy used and new cars and upgrade them was unprecedented for the time. By the next release the number of cars doubled the game itself now was 2 discs. With the same formula as the first game the legend of Gran Turismo was growing. No other game spent more time spinning in my PlayStation than GT2. There was nothing like acing the license tests and moving up in race tiers, from economy cars to bonafide lemans super cars. The ability to upgrade your car with engine modifications and suspension options was amazing. With the release of the PlayStation 2 the expectation of a new Gran Turismo was on everyone's wish list. Gran Turismo 3 was an instant hit and flew off the shelves, bigger better and faster than the previous entries this game set the standard for racing games, pure authentic and real, dubbed the real driving simulator, with enchanced graphics and a proven formula of license tests to warm you up and an arcade mode to race and test out tracks the world was on fire for this franchise. But there was a storm brewing elsewhere.Another release on the ps2 with Gran Turismo 4 and there wasn't another game close to the sheer size of it. Tons of cars added with each release, the ability to drive your dream car wasn't far away. The mighty PS3 was on the horizon and hopes of another installment was on everyone's mind. But the system came and time passed with no new GT title, finally a new entry emerged but seemed half hearted, gran Turismo prologue came and sold well but was a bare bones title with half the content everyone became used to. Time passed and elsewhere rumbles of a new racing franchise was starting to turn heads. Gran Turismo 5 finally came out and was another success but with less fanfare than previous entries. On the other side of the fence Microsoft was releasing Forza Motorsport 3 and people started taking notice, who was the new kid on the block? Could it even attempt to unseat the king of driving simulators? Yes! Forza was the next evolution in the racing genre and it did it with help from several racing franchises including Gran Turismo itself, part simulator part Need for Speed it took things to another level. Gran Turismo eventually released its 6th iteration with more of the same, how many times do we have to do these license tests? Same formula now for over 15 years, sure the cars were detailed meticulously and the tracks were perfect but the game has started to run its course, with less and less innovation in each release the fanbase has dwindled while the mighty Forza franchise now on there 6th entry and two spinoff titles with Forza Horizon has taken the torch from the once dominating Gran Turismo and changed the game. Still are the gorgeous cars and famous tracks from all over the world but Forza just feels fresh and fun whereas GT was becoming stagnant with the same old thing with each game released. With other racing titles like Dirt,Project Cars, Need for Speed and Grid all producing great alternatives GT has to start thinking of how there going to right this ship. Rumors of a new title simply called Gran Turismo Sport for the ps4 sometime in 2016, what can we expect? A more arcade racer with hints of simulator similar to Forza? Or something else? Polyphony Digital are masters at the driving genre and are car enthusiasts at heart, so no doubt they will have there sights set on reclaiming the throne of racings best once again. Or will another newcomer emerge and take this popular genre somewhere we have yet to go. Only time will tell but it's a good time to be a racing fan! The Champ @jsquyres33
