PS Vita rip The state of handhelds have been up and down since mobile phones have become more and more popular. The only mainstay in the handheld market is Nintendo . The gameboy,ds and 3ds have dominated the market for years, with the likes of Mario, Pokemon and the retro classics Nintendo is known for. Sega and Atari have both released there own handhelds over the years but they failed to capture there share of the market. In comes PlayStation. With the release of the psp (PlayStation portable) in the late 90's, a new player had emerged. With the new umd format the potential was limitless. The psp also had the ability to play movies. Umd was universal media disc and was similar to the gamecubes mini disc. The psp had the same graphical power as a huge ps2 system but in a handheld. But with limitations and only one thumb stick, there was only so much it could achieve . Lots of games and movies later the psp did well but couldn't overcome the immense popularity of the Nintendo handheld . While rumors of Microsoft and there own handheld coming out began to gain steam the next iteration of Playstations next handheld started to take shape. The PlayStation Vita or ps vita came out to huge fanfare with incredible launch games like uncharted golden abyss and a huge library of classics. The umd format was dropped for smaller thumb sized games, with a larger oled screen, full touchscreen support both front and back, 2 thumbsticks and the graphics power of a full PS3, the potential for the vita was huge. But as soon as a dozen great games were released the support for the vita suddenly dropped. The higher ups at Sony declared the vita as a legacy platform and no more triple a titles would be developed. Out of nowhere the popularity dropped abs the games got pushed to the small corner in most game stores. With a small trickle of new releases by third parties the vita is slowly dying. While the Nintendo 3ds still thrives and has amazing first party games released regularly it's the only handheld left, the mobile games market had taken off and isn't looking back . With free apps and games released by the minute it's the newest and strongest handheld platform out there. With a device people always have with them and easy to play games the future of the older handhelds may be in doubt. Nintendo will always be around until they change the game, the demise of the ps vita is a real shame. Amazing visuals and games it just didn't get the support it needed. A sad footnote to an incredible handheld system. With the demise of both Sony handhelds, Microsoft never released a handheld and focused on consoles. A smart move on there part .
